Premier Joan Kirner called a special press conference to explain what had happened. She said that a senior bureaucrat had made a mistake and given extra public money for the trip.
In an editorial, The Age newspaper also asked if such a trip was reasonable given that the state was in a recession and the Victorian Government was in debt. The newspaper agreed with Kennett that the trip was not a good idea.
Norris said that the trip wasn’t a “junket,” and he was upset by the criticism of the trip. He was worried that it could hurt relations in the Asia-Pacific region.
Retirement from Politics
After ten years in the Victorian Legislative Assembly, during which time he rose to become Deputy Speaker, Norris retired from politics in 1992 and was succeeded as the Member of Dandenong by John Pandazopoulos.
