Clarke Douglas Schmidt, born on February 20, 1996, is a professional baseball pitcher for the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball (MLB). The Yankees picked Schmidt in the first round, 16th overall, in the 2017 MLB draft, and he made his MLB debut in 2020.
Schmidt attended Allatoona High School in Acworth, Georgia, and later played college baseball at the University of South Carolina for the Gamecocks.
During his college years, Schmidt became South Carolina’s top pitcher, even after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2017. The Yankees signed him in 2017, but he didn’t play that year due to the surgery.
He debuted professionally in 2018 and spent time with the GCL Yankees and Staten Island Yankees. In 2019, Schmidt started with the Tampa Tarpons and was later promoted to the Trenton Thunder. He finally joined the Yankees in 2020, making his major league debut as a relief pitcher.
In the 2021 spring training, Schmidt faced a setback with a right elbow strain but showed no ligament damage. He returned later in the season, playing for the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.
For the 2022 season, Schmidt made the Yankees Opening Day roster and secured his first major league win on April 19. On July 24, he recorded his first career save against the Baltimore Orioles.
Schmidt’s brother, Clate Schmidt, also played college baseball at Clemson from 2013 to 2016. Despite being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2015, Clate recovered and pursued a professional career, last playing for the Single-A Dayton Dragons in 2019.
