Gertrude Torkornoo was born in Cape Coast, Ghana. She grew up in Winneba, a town in the Central Region of Ghana. Gertrude went to Wesley Girls’ High School and then to Achimota School. Later, she graduated from the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law in 1986.
Gertrude also earned a Postgraduate Diploma in International Law and Organization from the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in the Netherlands in 2001. In 2011, she obtained an LLM in Intellectual Property Law from the Golden Gate University School of Law in the USA.
Gertrude Torkornoo started her career as a volunteer at the FIDA Legal Aid Service and did an internship with a law firm in London. Later, she worked at Fugar & Co. law firm in Accra and then co-founded Sozo Law Consult.
In 2004, she became a Justice of the High Court of Ghana and was later promoted to the Court of Appeal in 2012. Gertrude has played important leadership roles in the judicial service of Ghana.
She chairs the E-Justice Committee and has led efforts to automate court processes, procure electronic resources, and use software in the Judicial Service.
Gertrude has also held various other roles, such as serving on the faculty and Governing Board of the Judicial Training Institute, vice-chair of the Internship and Clerkship Committee, and chair of the E-Judgment Committee, among others.
Gertrude Torkornoo was one of the judges who heard the 2020 election petition brought by John Mahama against The Electoral Commission of Ghana and Nana Akufo-Addo. She served as part of a seven-member panel.
