Early Career

Although Hayford had promised to pastor the church for for six months, he later felt obliged to stay permanently. Hayford spoke with Foursquare denomination president Rolf McPherson just a few weeks after accepting an invitation to pastor another Foursquare church, expressing that he desired to stay with the Van Nuys congregation.

By the early 1980s, The Church on the Way had become a pioneer of the megachurch movement, ranking among the largest churches in America, particularly within the Foursquare denomination, with a membership of over 10,000 at one point.

Hayford’s close friend, actor Dean Jones (dead), was an elder in the church, as were Pat Boone and Jan and Paul Crouch, the founders of Trinity Broadcasting Network, which routinely broadcast services from the church.

He retired as senior pastor of The Congregation On The Way in 1999 to focus on the college, however he returned briefly to assist the church during a difficult transition after his successor and son-in-law, Scott Bauer, died unexpectedly.

Hayford was elected to a four-year term as president of the Foursquare denomination on October 4, 2004, a post he chose not to pursue after that single term. Hayford felt inspired to relocate King’s University to Southlake, Texas, under the stewardship of Gateway Church in 2013.

The Church To The Way, led by senior pastor Tim Clark, bestowed the title of Pastor Emeritus on Hayford in 2015 in recognition of his ongoing contributions to church management and governance. ((wikipedia))
