Joorabchian began his career working for his father, and later as a trader at the International Petroleum Exchange in London. He then ventured into the stock market and fund management, moving to New York City and co-founding an investment company, American Capital, with his associate Reza Irani-Kermanian.
The company was based in Manhattan but registered in the British Virgin Islands. In 1999, American Capital acquired 85% of the Russian newspaper Kommersant.
