The arrest resulted from an ongoing investigation carried out by the UK police department, and in May 2023, the United Kingdom court sentenced former Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, Ike Ekweremadu, to nine years and eight months in prison for an organ trafficking plot.
Mrs. Ekweremadu was also charged and received a sentence of four years and six months. The medical doctor who acted as a ‘middleman’ in the plot, Dr Obinna Obeta, was sentenced to 10 years, and his medical license was also suspended.
