Paul Shipokosa Mashatile is a South African politician who is currently the second-in-command of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party. He was elected to this position in December 2022.
Prior to this, he was the party’s treasurer general from December 2017 and acted as the party’s Secretary General from January 2022. Mashatile was an anti-apartheid activist during the time of apartheid and was part of the United Democratic Front.

He served as a minister in the government of President Jacob Zuma, holding the position of Minister of Arts and Culture from 2010 to 2014. Before that, he was briefly the leader of the Gauteng province from 2008 to 2009.
He also held other ministerial positions in the Gauteng provincial government between 1996 and 2008 and again between 2014 and 2018. He is particularly influential in Gauteng, which is his home province, and he was also the leader of the ANC in Gauteng between 2007 and 2017.

When Mashatile was a student, he became involved in politics as an anti-apartheid activist in a place called Alexandra. He was part of an organization called the Congress of South African Students and helped start another group called the Alexandra Youth Congress.
He became the leader of this group in 1983. In the same year, he went to Cape Town for the launch of another organization called the United Democratic Front (UDF) and in 1985, he was chosen as the UDF’s leader for a region called Southern Transvaal.
He held this position until the UDF was closed in 1991. Because of his activism, he was arrested by the government in 1985 and was kept in prison without a trial until 1989.
