Leonor, Princess of Asturias, is the future queen of Spain, being the eldest daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.

Biography of Princess Leonor

She was born on October 31, 2005, during the reign of her grandfather, King Juan Carlos I. Leonor received her education at Santa María de los Rosales School, the same school her father attended.

After completing her secondary studies, she pursued an International Baccalaureate at UWC Atlantic College in Wales, UK. On August 17, 2023, she began her three-year military education at the General Military Academy.

In 2014, when her father became king after her grandfather’s abdication, Leonor was granted all the traditional titles of the heir to the Spanish crown, including Princess of Asturias, Princess of Girona, Princess of Viana, Duchess of Montblanc, Countess of Cervera, and Lady of Balaguer.

On her 18th birthday, October 31, 2023, she was formally declared the heir before the Cortes. If Leonor ascends to the throne as expected, she will be Spain’s first queen regnant since her great-great-grandmother, Isabella II, who ruled from 1833 to 1868.

Leonor was born to Felipe and Letizia, who were then the Prince and Princess of Asturias. Her birth took place at 01:46 on October 31, 2005, at the Ruber International Hospital in Madrid, through a caesarean section due to complications during labor.

Being the daughter of the heir apparent, she held the title of infanta and was second in line to the Spanish throne. Her birth was announced to the press by the royal family via SMS.

Leonor left the Ruber International Hospital with her parents on November 7, 2005, and was baptized at the Zarzuela Palace on January 14, 2006, by the Archbishop of Madrid, Cardinal Antonio Rouco Varela.

Like her father, Leonor was baptized with water from the Jordan River, using a Romanesque font that has been a tradition for christening Spanish princes since the 17th century.

Her godparents were her paternal grandparents, King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía, and she was given the name Leonor de Todos los Santos.

Princess Leonor has a younger sister named Infanta Sofia, who is second in line to the Spanish throne after her sister Leonor.

These two sisters share a close bond and are frequently seen together at public events. Interestingly, Infanta Sofia is following in her sister’s footsteps by attending the same school in Wales that Leonor currently goes to.
