Career

Takeoff began rapping in 2008, alongside family members Quavo and Offset. The group was originally known as Polo Club, but they later changed their name to Migos.

On August 25, 2011, the group released their first full-length project, a mixtape titled Juug Season. On June 1, 2012, they released the mixtape No Label.

Migos rose to notoriety following the release of their track “Versace” in 2013. Drake remixed the song, which peaked at number 99 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 31 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Yung Rich Nation, their debut studio album, was released in July 2015 and includes guest appearances from Chris Brown and Young Thug, as well as production by Zaytoven and Murda Beatz. The album reached number 17 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Migos’ first number one single, “Bad and Boujee” featuring Lil Uzi Vert, peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 during the week of January 21, 2017. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the song four times platinum (RIAA).

Takeoff appears in one of the music video’s background scenes, but he is not featured or recognized on the song. Takeoff said that he was not featured on the song because he was too busy throughout the recording process.

During the BET Awards 2017 filming of Complex’s Everyday Struggle, he was asked about his absence by hosts Joe Budden and DJ Akademiks, to which he replied, “Does it look like I’m left off “Bad and Boujee”?”

Budden left the set as a result of Takeoff’s answer, and an incident between Migos and Budden and their entourages nearly occurred before it was broken up by security.

Culture, Migos’ second studio album, was released on January 27, 2017, and debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 131,000 album-equivalent units, including 44,000 copies sold, in its first week.

Following the release of Culture II, Takeoff announced on October 23, 2018, an impending solo project named The Last Rocket, which will be published the following month. Two days following the announcement, he released the music video for his first song from the album, “Last Memory.”

Controversies

Migos were set to headline Georgia Southern University’s 2015 Spring concert at Hanner Fieldhouse on April 18, 2015. The performance began at 7:00 p.m. with local opening acts, but the group did not take the stage until nearly an hour and a half after its scheduled 9:00 p.m. start time.

Despite the fact that their performance contract required a minimum set length of 45 minutes, the ensemble performed for less than 30 minutes before exiting the stage.

The University Police Department, the Statesboro Police Department, and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office were present at the event as security detail and noticed a strong odor of marijuana from the group’s vans, prompting law authorities to question the drivers.

Following a thorough investigation, the rap group and 12 members of their entourage were arrested for possession of marijuana and another controlled substance, possession of firearms within a school safety zone, possession of firearms while committing a crime, and possession of firearms by convicted felons.

While university officials were aware of Migos’ reputation, the group was allowed to perform because the student body chose to have the group perform among seven acts that were up for consideration, and the performance was paid for using student fees and ticket sales.

According to the performance contract, the trio was to be paid $30,000, with an additional $3,000 going to their promoter, Big House Collective. Due to the group’s late arrival, truncated performance, and possession of contraband on university grounds, university officials first sought to hold Migos in violation of contract; nonetheless, the institution ultimately paid half of the agreed-upon payments.

The Bulloch County District Attorney’s Office freed Takeoff, Quavo, and six members of their entourage on bond on April 20, 2015, while Offset and six others remained in detention without bond. As a result of their arrests, Migos announced on April 28, 2015, that their Yung Rich Nation Tour will be postponed until July.

Sexual Assault Allegations

Takeoff was listed as a perpetrator in a civil action brought by a female victim on claims of “sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment, gender violence, and interference with civil rights” at a June 2020 party in Los Angeles on August 5, 2020.

It was reported on April 2, 2021 that the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office would not file criminal charges against Takeoff owing to a lack of evidence. As of April 2021, the civil suit court processes were still ongoing.
