On 5 March 2023, Tate Makgoe and his bodyguard died in a car accident when the car they were traveling in hit two cows on the N1 highway outside Winburg.

Makgoe joined the military wing of the African National Congress, Umkhonto we Sizwe, in 1984 and left South Africa. He was imprisoned at the Sun City Prison between 1986 and 1991 for his involvement in anti-apartheid activities.

When the ANC was unbanned, Tate Makgoe served on the party’s Northern Free State Regional Executive Committee in 1991.

He managed the party’s provincial campaign in the Free State during the 1994 general elections. Makgoe was the ANC’s provincial treasurer from 1998 to 2001 and served on the Provincial Executive Committee.
