After attending Ngwa High School in Aba, Abia State, he went on to study optometry at Manila Central University in the Philippines. He later obtained a specialist master’s degree in Hospital Administration from St. Jude College in the Philippines.

Upon his return to Nigeria in 1985, he worked as a consulting optometrist at Park Lane General Hospital in Enugu and earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Environmental Health Science from Abia State University.

Career

Ikonne served in various leadership roles at Abia State University and Abia State Polytechnic between 2010 and 2014, including as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Rector (on Rescue Mission), and Head of Department of Optometry.

In December 2015, he became the 7th Substantive Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University. He also served as Acting Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences, and Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine & Health Sciences.

In 1993, he was appointed as a member of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria, later becoming chairman of the education committee in Abia State.

In 2019, he was appointed Chairman of the Governing Board of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN) and served on the board until 2022.

Ikonne received numerous awards for his work in optometry, including the African Optometric Educator Award of the year 2003 and the Distinguished Merit Award of the Nigerian Optometric Association, 2006.
