Qualifications You’ll Need to Apply

Starting from February 1, 2023, if you are a teacher from another country and want to work in the UK, you will need to pass an exam to get your “Qualified Teacher Status” (QTS).

Citizens from Nigeria and other countries who have expertise in languages, math, or science and a teaching certificate can see if they will qualify to teach 11 to 16-year-olds student and apply.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree verified by UK ENIC.
  • Teacher training at level 6, with qualification of at least the same length as an English initial teacher training course (e.g., Bachelor of Education or Postgraduate Certificate in Education).
  • Course content must be practical and pedagogically focused.
  • Qualified to teach children at age 5 to 16 years.
  • Minimum of 9 months of professional teaching experience after qualifying.
  • Professional status as a teacher in the country where you qualified, without any restrictions or conditions on practice.
  • Meets the standard of English language proficiency (e.g., CEFR B2, IELTS SELT Consortium 5.5, LanguageCert 33/50, Pearson 59, Trinity College London Pass, PSI Services (UK) Ltd Pass).

Special Requirements for Teachers with Qualifications from Ghana, India, Jamaica, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa or Zimbabwe:

  • A teaching qualification at the standard of level 6, allowing you to teach 11 to 16-year-olds in mathematics, languages or science.
  • A teaching qualification at the standard of level 6, allowing you to teach 11 to 16-year-olds.
  • A bachelor’s degree consisting of at least 50% mathematics, science or language (excluding English) taught in English state schools (e.g. French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Mathematics and Science).

The UK government recently changed the rules for people who want to become teachers.

Starting in February 2023, people from Nigeria may not be able to become teachers in the UK.

The government is now giving priority to people who can teach subjects that are important in the UK.
