Next Cash and Carry store Got Burnt In FCT

The Next Cash and Carry, situated in the Jahi neighbourhood of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, was destroyed by fire yesterday, destroying assets worth billions of naira.

Although the source of the fire could not be determined immediately, firemen from the Federal Fire Service, FFS, fought in vain to extinguish the blaze.

Yesterday, the fire reportedly began a few minutes before 11 a.m. Ugo Huan, who earlier yesterday acknowledged the event on behalf of the FFS, asked vehicles to seek other routes.

“Next Cash and Carry Store is now on fire in Jahi, Abuja. The Federal Fire Service has sent firemen, who are actively battling the blaze. “The general public should take note and avoid that route,” she texted to Vanguard.

FCT Initiates Probes

In the meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory Administration said that it will examine the fire’s causes.

However, the on-site firefighting vehicle reportedly developed a defect and could not be deployed, forcing facility management to wait for the arrival of emergency services.

The FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, expressed regret over the fire incident and said that an investigation will be launched.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Anthony Ogunleye, the minister also expressed his condolences to the management and employees of the shop as well as the FCT business community for the tragic tragedy.

The minister congratulated the FCT Fire Service, the Federal Fire Service, the Fire Service Departments of the Nigerian Navy, Air Force, Guards Brigade, and Julius Berger Nig. Plc for responding with fire-fighting equipment.

“He applauded the work of the FCT FEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency, security agencies, and other responders in suppressing the fire.

“Malam Bello also assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire in an effort to prevent a recurrence in any other FCT business establishment.”

Also, Mrs. Florence Wenegieme, Director of Forecasting Response Mitigation at the FCT Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, said that the agency got a distress call at 9:45 a.m. and quickly deployed a team to the scene.

She cited Alhaji Abbas Idriss, Director-General of FEMA, as denying claims of looting at the location. Regarding the cause of the fire, Idriss said that investigations were underway to determine the immediate cause. He said that no lives were lost in the event and no one was hurt on the grounds.

Idriss urged company owners in the region to include risk considerations into their business strategies, pointing out that fire vehicles were impeded by the mall’s restricted access. In the meanwhile, the FCT Police Command has apprehended three criminals who tried to rob the Next Cash & Carry Mall.

DSP Josephine Adeh, FCT Police PRO, said in a statement, “The suspects who attempted to steal merchandise from the store and were promptly arrested include (1) Ali Audu, age 18; (2) Yahaya Yunusa, age 20; and (3) Sahabi Abubakar, age 18.”

At around 11:15 hours on Sunday, December 26, 2021 (yesterday), it was reported that a fire had broken out at the Next Cash and Carry Supermarket in the Jahi District of the FCT.

The Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, Julius Berger Fire Service, and members of other security agencies were deployed to manage the situation, minimise damage, extinguish the blaze, and maintain law and order.

“Under the supervision of Police Officers of the Command who were on the scene, well-intentioned residents of the neighbouring communities assisted in the evacuation of products and other valuables from the supermarket to a secure spot in the vicinity.

“Contrary to popular belief, there has been no successful looting or theft of merchandise from a store,” the author writes. “Investigations are presently underway to determine the origin of the fire. No casualties have been reported to yet.”

The Commissioner of Police FCT Command, CP Sunday Babaji, psc, has also visited the scene with the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, for an on-site evaluation and supervision of operations at the scene.
