Political Career
Wavinya Ndeti entered politics in 2007, when she ran for the Kathiani Constituency seat within Chama Cha Uzalendo and was ultimately successful in winning the seat.
She had previously taken part in the ODM-Kenya primaries, but because she believed they were unfairly rigged in favor of the incumbent MP Peter Kyalo Kaindi, she decided to convert to the Chama Cha Uzalendo party instead.
She eventually prevailed with a resounding victory, receiving 28,178 votes to Kaindi’s 9,813 in the final tally. As a result of her victory, Ndeti is the first and only woman to have held the position of representing the constituency in Parliament since the country’s independence.
Co-assistant Minister for Youth and Sports under Helen Sambili, Ndeti was given a position in the grand coalition administration shortly after it was formed.
She voted yes on the new constitution in the constitutional referendum that took place in 2010, noting the significance of having a level playing field in terms of the allocation of resources as well as having decentralized authority.
The majority of Kenyans voted in favor of the new constitution that President Mwai Kibaki promulgated on August 27, 2010, despite the fact that the document was controversial in the Machakos District.
Elections 2013 – 2017
In 2013, Ndeti, who was one of the founding members of CORD, campaigned on a ticket sponsored by the CCU for the newly created office of Governor of Machakos.
As her running mate, she has chosen Mutua Katuku, who was once the minister of Water and Natural Resources. She was defeated in the race by Alfred Mutua, and she also failed to win the election petition, which was based on the fact that she did not appoint sufficient party agents to all polling stations.
In 2017, Ndeti and Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana both made commitments to return to the Wiper Democratic Movement as part of a deal that was mediated and known as the Emali Declaration.
In the declaration, it was said that Kibwana would defend his position on the Wiper Democratic Movement, and that Ndeti would be handed a straight ticket to challenge Mutua’s position.
Wiper Democratic Movement
Ndeti left Chama Cha Uzalendo for Wiper on April 5, 2017, in accordance with a legislation that mandates candidates to change political parties within 90 days of an election. She was initially given a direct nomination alongside Peter Mathuki as her running companion, but the party chose to hold primaries.
The agreement was the result of months of negotiations between the Wiper Party and Ndeti’s CCU party, with Kalonzo reportedly convincing Mathuki and Machakos Deputy Governor Bernard Kiala to give up their ambitions in favor of a ticket that would send Mutua home and reclaim the seat for the party.
Muthama, the current senator, indicated that he would not run for re-election in 2017 on the Wiper platform. As a result, the WDM-K NEB gave former Machakos County Secretary of Education Jackson Kala a direct nomination to represent the party in the Senate race.
The IEBC approved Ndeti’s candidacy for Governor in early June 2017. On June 9, Ndeti filed a High Court appeal against the verdict. The IEBC tribunal ruling was stayed by High Court Judge George Vincent Odunga. On June 14, 2017, the judge denied the IEBC’s request to disqualify himself. Kiala opted to run as an independent candidate.
