Get to Know Eric Mays: Biography

Eric Mays, born on September 16, 1958, in Flint, Michigan, and passing away on February 24, 2024, was both an auto worker and a politician.

He served on the Flint City Council from November 13, 2013, until his demise in 2024, representing northwest Flint as the councillor from the city’s First Ward.

Mays gained notoriety during his tenure due to multiple suspensions and incidents that led to his removal from city council meetings.

In January 2016, Mays faced a 30-day jail term for an alleged car crash in 2013. The incident involved driving his car nearly three miles before ending up facing the wrong way on Interstate 475.

Although no witnesses testified to seeing Mays drive the vehicle that night, he confessed to driving drunk to several police officers during his arrest.

During the trial, Mays represented himself and focused on the jurors’ beliefs in God, attempting to delay the release of Breathalyzer test results. He argued that the case was highly politically motivated.

In November 26, 2017, Mays pleaded no contest to allegedly pawning a city-owned laptop nine times over two years. He defended his actions, stating it wasn’t criminal but a result of his financial situation.

Mays claimed that keeping the laptop in a pawn shop was safer due to past instances of trespassing at city hall. In 2020, Mays compared City Council President Monica Galloway to Adolf Hitler during a verbal altercation, accompanied by a Nazi salute.

This led to his removal from the meeting, with Councilman Maurice Davis successfully motioning to strip Mays of his leadership roles. Facing suspension on December 20, 2023, for “constant frivolous motions” and using “racist rhetoric,” Mays denied the allegations and planned to take legal action against the city council.

Mays was found deceased at his Flint home on February 24, 2024, at the age of 65. The City of Flint acknowledged his service and described him as “beloved among his constituents in the First Ward.”
