Early Life and Education
Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi was born on March 7, 1962. He pursued his higher education at the University of Lagos, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1983.
Shonubi furthered his studies at the same institution and earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering with a specialization in Production Engineering. Later, he pursued a master’s degree in business administration with a focus on Finance between 1988 and 1989.
Shonubi began his professional career as a Consultant Engineer at Mek-ind Associates, where he worked from 1984 to 1989. Driven by his interest in finance and technology, he joined various esteemed organizations, showcasing his diverse skill set.
In 2007, Shonubi transitioned from First City Monument Bank (FCMB) to Ecobank Nigeria Plc, where he served as an Executive Director overseeing Operations and Information Technology.
Later, he joined Renaissance Securities Nigeria Limited as the Director of Information Technology and Corporate Services.
Continuing his successful career, Shonubi joined Union Bank of Nigeria Limited as an Executive Director responsible for Operations, Technology, and Services from September 2009 to April 2012.
In May 2012, he assumed the position of Managing Director/CEO at Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc, holding the role until October 2018.
Deputy Governor and Acting Governor
Shonubi’s expertise and contributions to the Nigerian financial sector were further recognized when he became the Deputy Governor in charge of the Operations Directorate at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on December 9, 2019.
In this role, he represented the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on the Board of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). On June 9, 2023, Shonubi’s capabilities and extensive experience led to his appointment as the Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria by President Bola Tinubu.
This appointment followed the suspension of Godwin Emefiele as the CBN Governor, highlighting Shonubi’s crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s monetary policies and maintaining economic stability.
