Early Life and High School Career

Jeff Sims, the American football sensation, was born on January 1, 2002. His football journey kicked off at Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville, Florida, where he played from 2016 to 2020. He quickly rose to prominence as the starting quarterback during his sophomore year.

College Dreams and Florida State Commitment

Initially eyeing a spot with the Miami Hurricanes, Sims’ dreams took a different turn. The Hurricanes didn’t pick him up, but the Florida State Seminoles did, under the leadership of then-head coach Willie Taggart.

In February 2019, he committed to Florida State, aiming to be a backup quarterback to James Blackman. During that year, he showcased his skills in the Elite 11 quarterback competition. But when coaching changes shook Florida State, Sims withdrew his commitment in December 2019.

On December 18, 2019, Sims officially signed with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, choosing from multiple NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision offers.

He was ranked as the nation’s 10th best dual-threat quarterback and the 223rd recruit overall by 247Sports.com. In January 2020, he showcased his talent in the Under Armour All-America Game, an all-star high school football event.

As the 2019 season wrapped up, Georgia Tech’s quarterback roster underwent changes, creating an open competition. Sims, alongside other contenders, vied for the starting role.

James Graham and Sims emerged as frontrunners, but the team kept the starting quarterback under wraps until the season began.

Historic Debut

On September 11, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution unveiled Sims as the starting quarterback. The very next day, he made his collegiate debut, leading the Yellow Jackets to a remarkable 16–13 victory against the Florida State Seminoles.

Sims shone, completing 24 of 35 passes for 277 yards and amassing 64 rushing yards. He became the first true freshman quarterback to start a season opener for the Yellow Jackets since Reggie Ball in 2003, a historic moment.

His stellar debut earned him Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Rookie of the Week, 247Sports.com’s True Freshman of the Week, and mentions in the weekly lists of the Davey O’Brien Award and the Manning Award.

Ups and Downs

While Sims displayed improvement in his sophomore campaign, throwing for 1,468 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in 5 starts, he shared the starting quarterback role with freshman Jordan Yates.

Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets finished the season with a 3-9 record, missing out on bowl eligibility once again.
