Cortés has also played for the Baltimore Orioles and the Seattle Mariners. Cortés’ journey in baseball began at the age of four, inspired by watching the Florida Marlins play at Pro Player Stadium in Miami Gardens with his father.

Despite facing initial challenges, including his father’s imprisonment after a failed attempt to defect from Cuba, Cortés and his family eventually relocated to Hialeah, Florida, when he was seven months old.

He attended Hialeah High School and committed to playing college baseball at Florida International University. However, the New York Yankees selected him in the 36th round of the 2013 MLB draft, marking the beginning of his professional career.
