Sam Bankman (Samuel Benjamin Bankman-Fried), also known as SBF, is an American entrepreneur who used to lead FTX Trading Ltd, a cryptocurrency derivatives exchange.
He was born on March 6, 1992, in Palo Alto, California. His parents, Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, were both law professors at Stanford University.
Bankman-Fried attended Crystal Springs Uplands, a private high school in California, and graduated in 2010. Later, he pursued a degree in physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and graduated in 2014.
After finishing at MIT, Bankman-Fried worked as a trader at Jane Street, a global trading firm, until 2017. Subsequently, he founded his own company, Alameda Research, which specializes in quantitative trading.
He also served as the CEO of this company until 2019. In 2019, he established FTX Trading Ltd, a cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, and was its CEO until 2022.
Bankman-Fried has been known for his philanthropic efforts throughout his career. He donated 50% of his salary to pro-animal welfare organizations during his time at Jane Street.
Additionally, he was one of the major CEO donors to Joe Biden during the 2020 election cycle and supported various democratic causes.
