Biography of Malala Yousafzai
Yousafzai was born on 12 July 1997 in Swat District, Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, to a lower-middle-class family. Her parents, Ziauddin Yousafzai and Toor Pekai Yousafzai, are Sunni Muslims of Pashtun ethnicity, belonging to the Yusufzai tribe.
Due to financial constraints, she was born at home with the assistance of neighbors. She was named Malala, meaning “grief-stricken,” after a famous Pashtun poet and warrior woman, Malalai of Maiwand.
Fluent in Pashto, Urdu, and English, Malala received most of her education from her father, Ziauddin, who was a poet, school owner, and educational activist. Although she initially aspired to become a doctor, her father later encouraged her to pursue a political path.
Inspired by Benazir Bhutto, she began speaking out about education rights as early as September 2008. Despite the dangers posed by the Taliban’s growing influence in Swat, she started blogging anonymously for the BBC Urdu website, sharing her life experiences under the pseudonym “Gul Makai.”
In her blog, she chronicled her thoughts during the First Battle of Swat, describing the fear and challenges faced by girls attending school amid the Taliban’s threats and restrictions. The Taliban had issued an edict prohibiting girls from attending school, leading to the closure of many girls’ schools in the region.
Early Career
At a young age, Malala developed a strong passion for learning and became a champion for education. She fought for girls’ right to receive education in Pakistan and became a well-known advocate worldwide.
In 2012, at just 15 years old, she survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban because of her activism. Despite facing such adversity, Malala emerged as a global symbol for human rights and education, earning numerous prestigious awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.
She is also a talented author, having written several books, including her autobiography “I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban” and the picture book “Malala’s Magic Pencil.”
While there is limited information about Malala’s personal life beyond her achievements, it is known that she got married to Asser Malik in November 2021 in a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham, with their families present.
