Nwelue went to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to study sociology and anthropology but did not complete his degree.
He then went to the Asian Academy of Film and TV in Noida to study scriptwriting, and later received a scholarship to study directing at the Prague Film School in Czech Republic.
Onyeka Nwelue had some difficult experiences in his career. He was invited to the Man Hong Kong literary festival but was initially denied a visa, possibly because of the color of his skin.
However, the decision was reversed, and he was eventually able to attend. In 2017, Nwelue was attacked by soldiers for trying to stop them from assaulting a sex worker.
A year later, he was arrested in Rwanda for allegedly insulting the country’s president on Twitter. He was released after former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo intervened on his behalf.
In May 2020, some people demonstrated against Nwelue’s book A Country of Extraordinary Ghosts, calling for his death. More recently, Nwelue’s conduct as a visiting fellow at the African Studies Centre at the University of Oxford was called into question.
Students reported that he had charged attendees for a book launch event and claimed to be a professor at Oxford and Cambridge on social media, which was found to be untrue.
Additionally, he made some offensive comments on social media, including ones about African women and poor people. His visitorship at Oxford was cancelled, and his academic visitorship at Cambridge was terminated.
Onyeka Nwelue had a car accident on February 1, 2018, which was the day after his 30th birthday. He injured his lower back and had to use a wheelchair for two months. After that, he used a walking aid.
