Rashida Harbi, the eldest of 14 children, was born on July 24, 1976, in Detroit to Palestinian immigrants. Her mother hailed from Beit Ur El Foka near Ramallah, and her father from Beit Hanina in East Jerusalem.
Working on a Ford assembly line, her father moved the family from Nicaragua to Detroit. Raised in a working-class environment, Rashida played a crucial role in caring for her siblings while her parents worked.
She attended Harms, Bennett Elementary, and Phoenix Academy for elementary school and graduated from Southwestern High School in Detroit in 1994.
Later, in 1998, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Wayne State University and obtained her Juris Doctor from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2004. Rashida was admitted to the Michigan bar in 2007.
Rashida’s political journey began in 2004 as an intern for State Representative Steve Tobocman. She joined Tobocman’s staff when he became Majority Floor Leader in 2007.
Encouraged by Tobocman, she ran for his seat in 2008, winning the primary with 44% of the vote and securing over 90% in the general election.
In 2010, facing a primary challenge, Rashida won with 85% of the vote and dominated the general election with 92%. She continued her success in 2012, winning the Democratic primary against incumbent Maureen Stapleton and securing 92% in the general election.
Unable to run for the Michigan House in 2014 due to term limits, she ran for the Michigan Senate in 2014 but lost to incumbent Senator Virgil Smith Jr.
Rashida made history as the first Muslim woman in the Michigan State Legislature and the second nationwide. After leaving the state legislature, she worked at Sugar Law Center, a Detroit nonprofit providing free legal representation for workers.
In 2018, Rashida announced her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in Michigan’s 13th congressional district.
Despite finishing second in the Democratic primary, she won the general election, becoming the first Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress.
In 2020, Rashida faced and won the Democratic primary against challenger Brenda Jones with 66% of the vote. In 2022, following redistricting, she sought and won reelection in Michigan’s newly drawn 12th congressional district with 71% of the vote.
Rashida, along with Ilhan Omar, is one of the first two Muslim women to serve in Congress. She took office on January 3, 2019, wearing a traditional Arab dress, the thawb, during the swearing-in ceremony.
However, in November 2019, the House Ethics Committee launched an investigation into whether Tlaib used congressional campaign money for personal expenses.
In August 2020, the committee directed her to reimburse her campaign $10,800, citing violations of federal campaign laws.
