Afolabi was born in Ondo State as the first of twins, but he is from Idokunusi Ijebu in the Ijebu East local government area of Nigeria’s Ogun State. He went to Ansar Ud Deen Primary School in Ondo State for elementary school and Baptist Grammar School in Ibadan for middle school.

He then went to the University of Lagos, where he got an LL.B. certificate in law. He got his first job in 1981 with Nigerian Express Agencies Limited, where he worked until 1988, when he left to start SIFAX Group.
