Despite being surrounded by New York Islanders fans, McAvoy and his family supported the New York Rangers. McAvoy, growing up with three sisters, initially attended Long Beach High School before moving to Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as part of the USA Hockey developmental team.
