Jack Williams Hayford was an American author, Pentecostal minister, and the Chancellor Emeritus of The King’s University, which used to be called The King’s College and Seminary. He was born on June 25, 1934, and died on January 8, 2023.

He used to be the senior pastor of The Church On The Way in Van Nuys, California, which was one of the Foursquare denomination’s flagship churches. He was also the fourth President of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel.

People knew him because he was involved in the Promise Keepers movement and because he wrote and composed a lot. He had over 600 hymns and choruses in his catalog. Hayford was born in Los Angeles, but he grew up in Oakland, California, and went to high school there. Hayford moved back to Los Angeles after graduating in 1952 to attend Life Pacific University, which used to be called L.I.F.E. Bible College. He got his first bachelor’s degree in 1956.

After working as the National Youth Director for the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, he joined the faculty of L.I.F.E. and became the dean of students there. During this time, he went to Azusa Pacific University (APU) to start working on his second bachelor’s degree. In 1970, he got his degree.

He has also received a number of honorary degrees over the course of his life, including a Doctor of Divinity from both L.I.F.E. and Oral Roberts University and a Doctor of Literature from California Graduate School of Theology.

Hayford was called to pastor a small church, the First Foursquare Church of Van Nuys, California, in 1969, while serving as dean of students at L.I.F.E. and earning his degree at APU.

Although Hayford had promised to pastor the church for for six months, he later felt obliged to stay permanently. Hayford spoke with Foursquare denomination president Rolf McPherson just a few weeks after accepting an invitation to pastor another Foursquare church, expressing that he desired to stay with the Van Nuys congregation.

By the early 1980s, The Church on the Way had become a pioneer of the megachurch movement, ranking among the largest churches in America, particularly within the Foursquare denomination, with a membership of over 10,000 at one point.

Hayford’s close friend, actor Dean Jones (dead), was an elder in the church, as were Pat Boone and Jan and Paul Crouch, the founders of Trinity Broadcasting Network, which routinely broadcast services from the church.

Hayford felt driven in the late 1990s to construct a Pentecostal seminary in Los Angeles to train other pastors and founded The King’s College and Seminary. He retired as senior pastor of The Congregation On The Way in 1999 to focus on the college, however he returned briefly to assist the church during a difficult transition after his successor and son-in-law, Scott Bauer, died unexpectedly.
