His parents emigrated from Holopeka, a village on Lifuka in the Ha’apai Islands. Jonah, a Tongan speaker, spent part of his early childhood in Holopeka with his aunt Longo and uncle Mosese.

However, when he was one year old, he was sent to live with relatives in Tonga, returning to New Zealand at the age of almost seven.

In the 1995 Rugby World Cup, he gained worldwide recognition by scoring seven tries in just five matches and was honored as the Player of the Tournament. Notably, he became the first All Black since 1905 to score four tries against England in a Test match.

Unfortunately, Lomu faced health challenges throughout his life. In 2003, he was compelled to retire from rugby and underwent a kidney transplant in 2004.

Despite his efforts to return to the game, he never reached his previous playing level. Tragically, Jonah Lomu passed away in 2015 at the age of 40 due to a heart attack related to his kidney disease.
