McDole played college football at Mississippi State University and was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft. During his NFL career, he played for the Minnesota Vikings from 1981 to 1983 and had three receptions for 29 yards and 196 return yards.
He also holds the record for being the first receiver in Mississippi State Bulldogs history to have a 1,000-yard season. After his football career, McDole became a physical education teacher and the varsity wide receiver coach at Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama.
