Mbonambi, a native of Bethlehem in the Free State province of South Africa, developed a passion for rugby from his parents’ love for sports. Raised in a sports-oriented family, his mother played tennis, his brother football, his sister baseball, and his father was a boxer.
Educated at St. Alban’s College in Pretoria and later at the University of Technology Tshwane, Mbonambi initiated his professional rugby career with the Bulls in 2012.
He transitioned to the Stormers and Western Province in 2014, achieving success and winning the Currie Cup in 2017 and 2020. In June 2021, Mbonambi made a significant move to join the Sharks, following the footsteps of South Africa’s captain, Siya Kolisi.
